How to remove scuff marks from polyurethane hardwood floors. Polyurethane is a wood sealer that provides lasting protection for hardwood floors, but it is not without its flaws. While polyurethane does an excellent job of keeping the floor clean by repelling most liquids, its permeability leaves room for potential scuffs that could be left by certain objects like shoes or furniture.
This can make the floor look dull and unkempt, especially those polyurethane preserves that rely on color varnishes to provide their aesthetic appeal.
This doesn’t mean there isn’t a solution there are easy ways to remove these annoying scuff marks so you could have your shiny restored in no time.
How to remove scuff marks from polyurethane hardwood floors
Sprinkle baking soda on a scuffed area. Use a damp cloth and scrub lightly until the scuff disappears. Those who desire a deeper clean can repeat the process.
This method is best for removing scuffs that are greater than 2mm in size.
Using Baking Soda
Baking soda is a very useful scrub that can help you take care of your floor and make it look as good as new. In order to get the best results, preparation is key.
Mix baking soda with water to form a thick paste, since this will give you much better results than the original powder alone.
If the scuff mark has been caused by heavy wear (such as from furniture legs or wheels) simply sprinkle a bit of baking soda on it and then use a sponge to buff out the mark until it goes away.
For light scuffs, just create some baking soda paste as described above and apply directly over the scuff for effective cleaning.
Finally, if there are some spills in there try adding some white vinegar which will help remove stains making your floor look new in no time.
Clean the Affected Area Softly
Before you begin cleaning, remove any visible debris that might possibly scratch the floor. On a mop or cloth, dip a little bit of hardwood detergent and clean the affected area.
To have the desired effect, rub vigorously. After your final pass with the mop or cloth, wipe with a dry cloth once more.
Apply an Eraser
Using a pencil eraser is effective in removing scuffs. But it could cause further damage if not rubbed firmly. This method should be your last resort because it only lightens the marks instead of removing them completely.
Anyhow, follow these steps to attain professional results:
1. Get a pencil eraser.
2. Rub firmly until you remove the scuff mark.
3. Clean up the remaining eraser and then wipe off any residual that’s left behind using a clean dry cloth.
A Tennis Ball can be used to clean
To erase a large or stubborn scuff mark, we recommend applying the “scuff rub” method. Get a damp rag and dab it in the affected area. Wipe in one direction to get rid of any excess dirt and residue.
Then, take a dry cloth and wipe it clean in one direction to ensure that there is no longer any unwanted dust on your floor. Take a tennis ball and cut it open.
Hold up this “tennis ball” with a broom (or just stick it under anything stable) and rub firmly in the affected areas until the scuff mark starts to fade away.
